ok, so maybe it's not all about me. i'm wondering if KidOne is feeling a little stressed about first grade. this morning, he almost lost it when i brought him his clothes because apparently he thought it was saturday and he didn't have to go to school. he recovered quickly, though. when i dropped him off at school, i thought he looked sad. he might have even let me hug him in the hallway, but i didn't want to press my luck. i went back to the school later in the morning to help his teacher stuff the Friday Folders. when i asked how things were going so far (he's a new teacher at the school this year, so i was kind of asking about how he was doing, but also fishing about how KidOne was doing), he said "KidOne has been very quiet this week. i think he's just scoping things out." i thought this was a little strange, because if you asked KidOne's kindergarten teacher for 100 words to describe KidOne, i'm pretty sure "quiet" wouldn't make the list. then i saw a friend of mine in the hallway who works as a paraprofessional at the school, and whose son is in KidOne's class. i told her what the teacher said, and she said that her son told her that KidOne doesn't say a word all day. add to that the fact that i saw KidOne in the hallway and waved to him and he didn't really respond. normally i would think he was just perturbed that i acknowledged him in front of his friends, but in light of what the teacher and my friend had to say, i'm wondering if he's having a difficult time adjusting to first grade. he doesn't have anyone from his kindergarten class in his first grade class, and i know he was a little disappointed about that. but i think i'm realizing that i have to stop wallowing in how sad i am about him being gone all day, and concentrate on helping him adjust to first grade.
