7:34 a.m.

i am so glad it's friday. i need a break from my news shift and the constant overwhelming news out of new orleans. i feel as if i've been physically battered by it. i can't even begin to imagine how the people who are trapped there without food or water are feeling. isn't this the U.S.? why the hell are so many of our most needy citizens suffering so much, waiting so long for help? even if we can't get people out right away, why the hell aren't we dropping cases upon cases of bottled water, and MRE's and diapers, and formula, etc., that they can use while they are waiting? the people who are trapped in the superdome were told to go there by government officials because they didn't have the means to leave the city. where are those government officials now? safe and sound somewhere.

thank god for the kids....a reason to smile and laugh and keep going. yesterday KidOne's homework was to write word problems. he had to write a problem where the answer was four of some animal of his choosing. of course, KidOne chose monkeys because for some reason he's obsessed with monkeys. i said "ok, what are you going to write?" and he said "How about 'Chuck has two monkeys. One is pregnant. It had twin monkey babies. How many monkeys does Chuck have now?'" For some reason, the phrase "twin monkey babies" struck me as hysterically funny. he didn't use that though, even though i almost begged him to. he said "Mommy, homework is supposed to be serious!"

it was good to laugh...............
